When a fashion house best known for its luxury hoodies and satirical T-shirts sends suits to the catwalk, you know that tailoring is having a moment. The spring/summer 2019 offerings from Balenciaga at least stick to the bulky aesthetic of the company, with square-cut jackets dropping to mid-thigh in poppy red and electric blue.
They weren't the only ones turning up the volume; in his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air prime, Paul Smith's checked double-breasted suits buttoned somewhere around the belt region evoked Will Smith. "I thought it would be nice to style the show big again after all the slim shapes we've been seeing," he explained. "The big shapes that 14 and 15-year-olds have never experienced, because if they go to see a band, they're all skin-tight."
Of course, only a total newb will assume that buying a suit jacket a few sizes up is an easy event. Instead, opt for a generously relaxed fit tailoring cut to maintain a sartorial slant, but one with all the simple wearability of a cardigan.
